Charlotte Jenkins opened the Gullah Cuisine Restaurant May 10, 1997. Charlotte was catering throughout the LowCountry for 10 years. Her catering became so successful that people wanted to have the opportunity to eat her wonderful food more often than on special catered occasions. Charlotte and her husband, Frank, opened on Highway 17 near the entrance to I-526 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Today, Gullah Cuisine restaurant serves a lunch buffet featuring Gullah and southern-style vegetables including collard greens, okra soup, green beans, macaroni, succotash, cabbage, candied yams and other seasonal favorites. You can always find barbequed chicken, as well as her distinctive fried chicken, baked chicken and pork chops on the buffet.
The restaurant is decorated with art and craft that feature Gullah heritage, such as paintings, posters, and those famous hand-made sweet grass baskets. Along with a wonderful lunch buffet, in the evenings, Gullah Cuisine presents a more formal dinner menu featuring several traditionally prepared Gullah specialty dishes.
